USES FOR DOLBY ATMOS AND SPHEROUND
NOW WE HAVE DOLBY ATMOS (AND SOON SPHEROUND), WHAT CAN WE USE THEM FOR?
EXPECTED USES:
- Immersive music (what most people want)
- Special compositions with instruments placed all around the listener
- Space battles in 3-D (or other kinds of battle)
- Large church and concert hall ambience in a recording
- Sounds at an airport or spaceport
- Classsical music intended to be performed from various places in a church or concert hall
Examples include Handel's "Messiah"* and Berlioz's "Requiem"
- Exodus 20 and Matthew 3:17
- Several movies were made in a version of Dolby Surround with height speakers
- Nature all around: wooded area, aviary, or bringing outdoor sound into a care center†
SUGGESTED and FUN USES:
- A 3-D aircar traffic jam
- I remember seeing a play with people singing out of different windows on both sides of the street
- Explode-a-mix: Move all of the musical parts apart so each one is in a different space
- Capture the sounds inside a factory†
- "Fantasia 3"
- Landing UFOs
- Cartoon cat-and-mouse chase in 3-D
- A thunderstorm (my very first height effect, done in Hafler Diamond quadraphonic system in 1971).
OFF THE WALL USES:
- Use my spherfield mic† to hear what is going on outside your house from in your media room
- Capture the sounds of a live concert in 3-D†
- Use the Spheround decoder to listen to SQ recordings in a new immersive way

USING ATMOS
* When I was a child, I was part of one of those performances of "Messiah" in a church
that had balconies behind the preacher, on both sides of the front of the sanctuary, and at the back
(with a large church organ in the back). Surround sound before we could record it.
